Sketching Up Characters – 005

Character 005 copy small

I had a client request for an octopus on a map I’m creating. This sketch took about 45 minutes and ended up looking pretty good on the map. He’s only the third octopus I’ve ever drawn, and the only one submerged in water this way. I’m going to paint him similar to a rainbow octopus with an oceanic background, we’ll have to see how it turns out.

Did you know Octopi can learn, they can process complex information in their heads, and they can behave in equally complex ways? They mimic other creatures, they sometimes carry their hiding places with them, they are expert problem solvers, and even like to play fetch. They show like and dislike toward humans too.

They are one of my favorite creatures 🙂
