Trump Announces Resignation of US Homeland Security Secretary Nielsen

That never transpired, but on Monday, the White House announced the Secret Service director would be leaving his post, compounding Homeland Security Secretary's Kirstjen Nielsen's resignation on Sunday - and more officials from within the department are expected to be gone soon as well.

Then, floor time will be eaten up before the Republican majority likely pushes all of them to confirmation. Why has the chief of Homeland Security QUIT?

Mr Trump wants someone "tougher" in the role, according to Ronald Vitiello, the top official at US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

It's hard not to have sympathy for outgoing Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen.

As for Acting Secretary McAleenan's prospects: He's shown no particular signs of being better or worse than the average border hawk. Acting White House chief of staff Mick Mulvaney has held his post since January, following John Kelly's resignation a year ago. There's also an acting USA ambassador at the United Nations.

Nielsen's relationship with the president had always been said to be hard. Before that she was chief of staff to John Kelly during his term as DHS secretary.

Nielsen's successor deserves more support from Congress as well as the White House than she received, but it won't hurt to have someone in the job who is perceived as tougher by observers on both sides of the border. With a mounting number of Democrats adding their names to the race, immigration policy and practice will dominate USA headlines in the months to follow.

On Friday, he called for Congress to "get rid of the whole asylum system" and get rid of immigration judges, and criticized a long-standing federal court decree mandating certain standards of care for migrant children.

Border Patrol estimates put the number of migrants passing through Mexico at over 100,000 in March, most from El Salvador, Honduras and Guatemala: the highest monthly figure in almost a decade, according to Nielsen.

Garza stressed the need for Congress to change USA immigration laws "so that we stop encouraging illegal immigration".

"When even the most radical voices in the administration aren't radical enough for President Trump, you know he's completely lost touch with the American people", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Trump announced on Sunday in a tweet that U.S. Customs and Border Protection Commissioner Kevin McAleenan would be taking over as acting head of the department.

But McAleenan has spoken publicly about the need for US aid dollars to countries such as Hondorus, El Salvador and Guatemala - from where many recent undocumented migrants originate.

Trump cut aid to those three countries last month in response to the surge. Nielsen, 46, oversaw this "zero-tolerance" policy on illegal immigration. "We have taken unprecedented action to protect Americans". "America needs a Homeland Security Secretary who will respect the sanctity of families, honor our proud heritage as a nation of immigrants, and restore sanity to this Administration's policies".

Delaware Democrat Chris Coons said Monday that what is "striking is how numerous secretaries of the largest departments of this government are acting at this point".

These include the US administration's much-criticised 2018 policy separating parents and children at the US-Mexico border. "She had a background in cyber security".

"I've had conversations with Republican colleagues over the previous year or so who swear that she was reluctant to impose some of President Trump's most egregious policies".
