It took less than 24 hours for Walton to be named the new head coach of the Sacramento Kings, while the Los Angeles Lakers will begin their search.

Lakers guard Rajon Rondo said just this week that Walton "did a hell of a job with what he had, the cards he was dealt".

Head coach Luke Walton of the Los Angeles Lakers during the National Basketball Association game against the Phoenix Suns at Talking Stick Resort Arena on October 24, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. "We wish Luke and his family the best of luck moving forward".

Although some wondered if Magic Johnson's abrupt departure from the Lakers might save Walton and his staff, it's clear it did nothing more than maybe buy them an extra day or two.

"I want to thank Jeanie Buss and the Buss family for giving me the opportunity to coach the Lakers", Walton said.

Many considered him the unofficial Coach of the Year for his guidance of the then-champion Warriors at the start of the 2015-16 season in place of an ailing Steve Kerr. Luckily for Kerr, the state of the Warriors is the polar opposite of that of the Lakers.

Pace is what propelled the Kings to their surprising finish this season, and Walton is certainly capable of piloting a team that plays fast.

Well, I think it's safe to say I called this one correctly.

Rondo, who is on the sixth team of his career, praised Walton for his ability to relate to players.

Now, the Lakers and James will look for another coach, and two early candidates have emerged - former Cavaliers coach Tyronn Lue and Sixers assistant coach Monty Williams. But at that time, Walton didn't even interview with the Kings.

The Kings have filled their coaching vacancy, according to multiple reports.
