Trump says United States will recognize Israel's sovereignty over Golan Heights

Pompeo was asked about the issue, but declined to answer. South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham, who recently visited Israel and urged the president to recognize the Golan, indicated he would push for a motion on Capitol Hill. Trump wrote on Twitter.

His trip to Israel, three weeks before a closely contested election, was portrayed in local media as a Trump administration boost for the right-wing Netanyahu.

"The President has made clear his support for Netanyahu".

"I have no idea, I hear (Netanyahu's) doing okay". I don't know if he's doing great right now, but I hear he's doing okay.

The Golan announcement is likely to further complicate Trump's long-awaited plan to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. While Pompeo said this was "not a change in US policy", he said that the language used in the Human Rights Report was used "with great intentionality". It later annexed the Golan Heights and East Jerusalem in moves never recognized by the worldwide community.

Amid scandals that may threaten his presidency, Trump is also trying to re-assert his commitment to Israel ahead of the annual AIPAC conference early next week, Jahshan said. "It's very rare for a secretary of state to come visit an Israeli prime minister without any apparent diplomatic reason justifying it, without a peace process, without any regional agenda".

Senior U.S. officials, including President Donald Trump and numerous predecessors, have visited the wall in the past but never with an Israeli leader.

"At a time when Iran seeks to use Syria as a platform to destroy Israel, President Trump boldly recognizes Israeli sovereignty over the Golan Heights". Regardless, the president's sentiment contradicts decades of US policy, undermines the legitimacy of American opposition to Putin's annexation of Crimea, and will embolden right-wing forces in Israel who have been pushing for the annexation of the West Bank (a move that would ostensibly make Israel into a de jure apartheid state). "The Arab League stands fully behind the Syrian right to its occupied land", he said in a statement published by Egypt's state news agency MENA.

Turkey which supports Syrian territorial integrity initially backed the USA at the start of the Syrian crisis but has grown further away from the United States over their differing stances over Bashir al-Assad. "If Assad got ahold of Golan they would operate against Israel from there too". He called his Democratic opponents "anti-Israel" and "anti-Jewish" after the Democratic-controlled House of Representatives passed a resolution this month that denounced bigotry of all kinds without rebuking Democratic lawmaker Ilhan Omar for allegedly anti-Semitic remarks.

"Every single person was supportive of the idea", said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity. Graham often consults Trump on foreign policy matters.

Previous US administrations have treated Golan Heights as occupied Syrian territory, in line with United Nations security council resolutions. First, he recognized Jerusalem as Israel's capital and moved the USA embassy here.

Since Israel captured east Jerusalem and the Old City in 1967, USA officials have avoided appearances at the Western Wall with Israeli leaders to avoid the appearance of recognizing Israel's control over the city's most sensitive holy sites.

Trump remains popular in Israel, and his advisers have been developing a Middle East peace proposal for release sometime after the Israeli elections.

Palestinian peace negotiator Saeb Erekat panned the Golan announcement and said US policy would bring "bloodshed in our region".
