Duke spokesman Michael Schoenfeld said the university's police department has no criminal reports naming or involving Fairfax. "We believe survivors, we believe Dr. Vanessa Tyson, we believe Meredith Watson". Through her lawyers, she said that she was "reluctantly coming forward out of a strong sense of civic duty". "Similarly, she is not seeking any financial damages", Smith said. In a statement on Friday, Fairfax said that he will not resign and asserted that the allegations are part of a "vicious and coordinated smear campaign". It is demonstrably false.
"I felt a responsibility to myself, the beloved students I teach, and the fearless women I've tried to help overcome their own trauma", she wrote.
He demanded a full investigation to "clear my good name". "I have passed two full field background checks by the Federal Bureau of Investigation and run for office in two highly contested elections with nothing like this being raised before", Fairfax said.
"Ms. Watson was raped by a basketball player during her sophomore year at Duke".
She says she was friends with Mr Fairfax while they studied at Duke University, but that they never had a romantic relationship.
Other congressional Democrats made unqualified calls for Fairfax to resign. The governor said at that event that he would not resign unless he decided he wouldn't be able to govern effectively.
Tyson wrote that upon hearing the news and reading stories suggesting that "Mr. Fairfax would be sworn in as Governor", she issued a now-deleted post on Facebook last week revealing that she had been sexually assaulted by a Democrat in a state office who would likely get a "BIG promotion". "There's corroboration at the time she told people about it. Dr. Tyson, the first accuser, she knew where it happened, when it happened, if you read through her details of what happened to her, it's searing".
The firm, New Jersey-based Smith Mullin, said the alleged assault occurred in 2000.
Although the Democratic Party has taken nearly a zero-tolerance approach to misconduct among its members in this #MeToo era, a housecleaning in Virginia could be costly: If all three Democrats resigned, Republican House Speaker Kirk Cox would become governor.
Justin Fairfax fights off allegations of sexual assault, American Enterprise Institute senior fellow Marc Thiessen insisted Friday that those accusations fail to match the allegations made past year against Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh.
Virginia's House Democrats have followed the state's Legislative Black Caucus in not calling for resignations of the lieutenant governor or attorney general after insisting the governor must go. "I call for his immediate resignation", said McAuliffe on Twitter.
If Northam steps down, as many critics have called for him to do, Fairfax would assume the governorship.
We have each publicly called for Governor Northam to resign.
Presidential candidates Cory Booker and Kirsten Gillibrand have urged him to resign as well.
Mr. Northam said that he was not in the photo, which appeared on his yearbook page in 1984.
Fairfax says his sexual encounter with Tyson was consensual.
Scripps College in California, where Tyson now serves as an associate politics professor, also confirmed in a Thursday evening statement that Tyson had previously "shared with several members of the Scripps community the details about a 2004 sexual assault", which were "consistent" with her written statement.
He said Tyson told him oral sex in particular brought back painful memories of her childhood trauma.
