Amazon's Alexa Echo Malfunctions in Europe Due to Overusage on Christmas

Customers seem to be growing more comfortable ordering with Amazon's voice assistant, Alexa, with the company saying people used it for shopping three times as much as a year ago.

Amazon'sAlexa suffered outages in Europe on Christmas Day as people who received Echos as gifts rushed to set up the virtual assistant. 9to5Mac said it's likely that a bunch of post-Christmas Alexa customers were using the search phrase "setup Amazon Alexa", which could have let the phony app climb the App Store charts after the holidays.

Amazon's Alexa generally works by sending voice commands through Amazon Echo devices that go straight to a server where a computer interprets them. "We are thrilled that in the USA alone, more than one billion items shipped for free this holiday with Prime". Nonetheless, investors will still have to wait and see how Amazon's earning in the fourth and final quarter impact their overall earnings.

While Amazon has expanded into nearly every area of retail, from pharmaceuticals to groceries, its more profitable units are cloud computing and advertising.

Amazon said that tens of millions of people around the world began Prime free trials or paid memberships over the Christmas period. Amazon shares have gained about 17 percent this year, compared with an 12 percent decline on the S&P 500.

In addition to the newer Echo devices, the Amazon Fire TV, Fire tablet and Kindle remained popular and also sold in the millions, Amazon said. Every time someone asked Alexa a question such as "Alexa, is it raining outside", the AI Assistant will give out the following response "Sorry, I'm having trouble understanding you right now".
