The match was not easy, but the Belarusian was able to change the course of the game, and achieved victory, 7-5, 6-3.

As the second seed in Shenzhen, Tsitsipas enjoyed an opening bye in the ATP 250 tournament but fell at the first hurdle as Herbert prevailed to book a quarter-final meeting with Ramos-Vinolas.

Puig had come from a bagel set down to defeat the Australian Open champion 0-6 6-4 6-4 in the second round at the Miami Open in March and the 24-year-old repeated the dose with a forehand victor to set up a clash against home favourite Wang Qiang, who defeated Daria Gavrilova in straight sets, in an all-unseeded battle.

Meanwhile, Bernard Tomic fought off a match point to come through 7-6 (7-5) 2-6 7-6 (8-6) against Lloyd Harris.

The Australian was in red hot form at the China event, beating the German 7-5 6-1.

Qualifier Monica Puig reached the quarter-finals of the Wuhan Open after defeating Caroline Wozniacki for the second time this year. On Wednesday it was the turn of Puig to send more shock waves through the field of the Wuhan Open as she knocked-out the world number two, Wozniacki.

Suddenly, the aggression that had initially seemed over-eager was resulting in a cascade of winners - 24 in the set - and putting her in control; her groundstrokes were holding up enough to puncture even Wozniacki's indefatigable defence; and her first serve, missing to start with, was betting her free points.

Puig, who turns 25 on Thursday, appeared unfazed by her opponent's stature, and kept the Dane under pressure throughout.

Anett Kontaveit needed three sets to see off China's Shuai Zhang 6-4 4-6 6-1, Dominika Cibulkova defeated Daria Kasatkina 6-3 7-6 (7/3) and Aryna Sabalenka beat Sofia Kenin 6-3 6-3.

The Aussie wrapped up the match in just more than 75 minutes, setting up a quarter-final against Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova.

"I feel like by far this was my best match", said Barty, who is looking to end the 2018 season on a high.

She was soon rewarded for her aggression though as some fearless visits to the net coupled with 24 winners gave her the first set via a tiebreaker.
