A 52-year-old woman is accused of slashing herself early Friday morning and then turning the blade on five other people, including three infants.
A sixth person was found in the basement of the day care centre in the Flushing neighbourhood. A 3-day-old girl and a 1-month-old girl were stabbed in the abdomen, and a 20-day-old girl suffered cuts to her ear, chin and lip, according to the Associated Press.
The victims - two little girls and a boy, plus two adults - were in stable condition Friday at local hospitals, NY police said.
The injured man is a father of one of the chilren at the day centre and he recieved a stab wound to his leg. Another adult who was hurt is a woman who works at the centre.
Police say they believe those wounds were self-inflicted.
Investigators have not determined a motive for the attack.
A police spokesman said victims had "multiple stab wounds", adding they are looking into reports some of the victims are children.
