A large number of DMK supporters thronged the hospital.

DMK leader M K Stalin has asked party cadres to remain calm and maintain "military-like discipline" after his father and party president M Karunanidhi died in a Chennai hospital on Tuesday.

A spate of visitors have visited the five times chief minister of Tamil Nadu during the past few days, including President Ram Nath Kovind, Vice President Venkaiah Naidu, Congress president Rahul Gandhi, Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda. It's been a long journey for the his clan that made it to the top of Tamil Nadu politics.

His last tweet was also a photo with Karunanidhi, when he went to wish him for his 94th birthday in June. At the age of 33, M Karunanidhi entered the Tamil Nadu assembly by winning the Kulithalai seat in the 1957 election. His supporters and fans in Tamil Nadu were anxiously waiting to hear good news about his health after he was admitted to hospital on July 28.

Tributes have poured in from around India, a clear indication of the stature of the Tamil leader on the federal scene.

After DMK's first election, Karunanidhi was promoted as the treasurer of the party in 1961 and became the deputy leader of Opposition in 1962. "I was told that he had been in politics for several decades and was a great leader". The family members of the DMK patriarch had met the TN Chief Minister Edappadi K.Palanisamy and requested the latter to allocate a place near Kalaignar's political mentor Anna's memorial at Marina beach, to bury the mortal remains of Kalaignar.

Continuing Annadurai's argument that an ideal Centre is the one which left sufficient powers with the states and kept just enough power with itself to protect the integrity and sovereignty of the country, Karunanidhi continued to work on the footsteps of his predecessor. He blamed the raid on his opponent Jayalalithaa who also faced allegations of graft and was found guilty of corruption after her death.

Stalin was accompanied by some party colleagues.
