Text messages obtained by the IG showed that FBI agent Peter Strzok, the lead agent on the counterintelligence investigation into alleged Russian interference, told high-ranking FBI lawyer Lisa Page that they would stop Trump from becoming president.
Trump on Sunday (Monday NZT) argued the documents support his view that the Justice Department was conducting illegal surveillance on his campaign.
Trump tweeted a series of inaccurate claims, including his allegation that the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance (FISA) warrant application against Page was "responsible" for starting the probe.
But Trump's tweets did not address the fact that the FISA application revealed its sourcing at length and was approved by a judge, before being renewed three more times by three other judges.
But lawmakers from both political parties said that the documents don't show wrongdoing and that they even appear to undermine some previous claims by top Republicans on the basis for obtaining a warrant against Page.
But that didn't stop President Trump from taking to Twitter on Sunday and lying about what the documents showed. Not only that, they were then and appointed to the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court by a conservative. Trump tweeted July 23.
'I don't think they did anything wrong, ' the Republican senator from Florida said of the FBI's surveillance activities, speaking on Sunday in an interview with Jake Tapper on CNN's State Of The Union. Released online under the Freedom of Information Act, the documents note the political ties to Steele's work but said it still believed some of his report to be "credible". "They laid out all the information and there was a lot of reasons for why they wanted to look at Carter Page".
"So we now find out that it was indeed the unverified and Fake Dirty Dossier, that was paid for by Crooked Hillary Clinton and the DNC, that was knowingly & falsely submitted to FISA and which was responsible for starting the totally conflicted and discredited Mueller Witch Hunt!" Whole sections in the application - detailing the FBI's justification for believing Page was a Russian agent - are blacked out.
U.S. President, Donald Trump, has again blamed former President Barack Obama, for "not doing something" about alleged Russian meddling in the 2016 presidential election, during his tenure. These are wiretap applications from very early in the Trump-Russia investigation seeking permission from a national security court to surveil Carter Page, who had just left the Trump campaign a month earlier in September of 2016, to see what was happening. "I think he's said it about 1,000 times". Page denied this to CNN. He also says he has never met Sechin and Diveykin while denying that he is a Russian agent. As a private consultant, Steele was hired to investigate Trump's ties to Russian Federation as part of opposition research funded by Democrats. "Court hearing transcripts about these FISA warrants should be released quickly so the public can have full information and accountability for any misuse of FISA warrants to target the Trump team".
