The party's activists are ready for that to change.

Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, a 28-year-old Latina and democratic socialist, defeated Joe Crowley, a 10-term incumbent, on Tuesday night in their party's congressional primary in New York City.

Democrats noted that Crowley is their only House incumbent to lose so far this year, compared to several in the GOP.

Mr. Crowley has been an outsized personality on Capitol Hill and was seen as a contender to succeed Nancy Pelosi as leader of the House Democrats. She stated that "from day one" Trump had committed "violations", also noting investigations into the president's former campaign.

Ocasio-Cortez ran on a strong left-wing platform, including support for universal health care and a federal guarantee of jobs.

"We took that message to doors that had never been knocked on before", Ocasio-Cortez said Wednesday during an interview with CNN.

Impervious to common sense and unwilling to learn the lessons from Clinton's loss, the top dogs in the Democratic party were still reluctant to listen.

Sullivan, who also works in politics, said voters have been desparate for leadership, and Ocasio-Cortez delivers. "She can talk about racial justice, immigration justice, economic justice. But running together, as part of a rising movement, they're finding the courage to do something extraordinary". Ocasio-Cortez, who earned 57.5 percent of the vote compared to Crowley's 42.5 percent, seemed shocked by the results at an election party in a Bronx pool hall on Tuesday night. She also wants to abolish ICE - Immigration and Customs Enforcement - the Homeland Security division that enforces u.s. immigration laws.

"The people closest to the pain should be closest to the power". In 1992, 55 percent of the party also had a high school degree or less compared to 32 percent 24 years later.

Liberal Democrats on Wednesday said a string of victories in US nominating contests, notably the surprise toppling of powerful congressman Joseph Crowley in NY, proved the party must embrace progressive priorities or face defeat. Only one-quarter of the congressman's voting-age populace was white, according to demographic data compiled by Daily Kos Elections. And change is the only way that we're going to reclaim ground that was lost when Trump took office in 2016. Levin said. "If you are not, you are going to face a challenger who actually does mirror the district".

"As Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, Joe Crowley brought principled, unifying and forward-looking leadership to the historic challenges of the Trump Administration".

"We actually want to govern where the Republicans just want to create chaos", Mr. Gallego said.

"I think that some of the issues we even have today may have to do with some of the calcified structures and relationships", she said. Cleaver has been in Congress since 2005. "They can lock down every big donor and every key endorsement and they can still be beaten, because people still vote-and there is still some democracy left". In April, a secret recording was leaked, of House Minority Whip Steny Hoyer telling progressive candidate Levi Tillemann, who was running in Colorado's Sixth District, that he should get out of the race to make room for Jason Crow, the candidate favored by the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee.

ANOA CHANGA: Well, to talk about another race in NY, we just saw Dana Balter up in, I think it's New York's 24th Congressional District, had an unbelievable win last night as well against an anti-choice DCCC-backed candidate.
