On the morning of Eid, Muslims gather in nearby mosques or outdoor spaces to perform their traditional prayer which consists of a sermon and a congressional prayer.

Due to the dates of Ramadan varying from one year to another on the Gregorian calendar, Eid is also on a different day each year because it is determined by the lunar calendar. When the crescent moon is seen, Eid can begin.

For new Muslims, especially the ones who will be celebrating their first Islamic festival - Eid Al Fitr, the day holds much more meaning than just being about fancy clothes and elaborate meals.

In his Sallah message to mark the end of the Ramadan fasting period, President Muhammadu Buhari stressed the importance of putting the virtues of Islam into practice beyond the fasting season.

Eid-Ul-Fitr, otherwise known as "feast of the breaking of the fast" is an important festivity celebrated by Muslims all over the world to mark the end of the holy month of fasting.

There are, however, exceptions, as some sects have more strict rules to establish that the moon has been sighted and rely on individual testimonies than scientific methods.

The ministry announced that the crescent moon for the Islamic month Shawwal was sighted in Morocco on Thursday evening.

From fire-lit parades in Indonesia, to crowded journeys home in Bangladesh, we've found the best pictures from this year's Eid al-Fitr.

The UAE's moon-sighting committee has announced that Friday, June 15 will be the first day of Eid Al Fitr, marking the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

"Eid Mubarak! I hope that we can all use this time to think about peace, unity and inclusion as we work to develop Malawi", Muluzi, a Moslem, posted on his Twitter feed.
